It could have been worse

The woman who has been creating all these false personalities based on other actual people is certainly messed up a little in the head.  She probably has a personality disorder because nobody in their right mind would create multiple different identities on the internet as she did.  This documentary is old but at the time of its release the digital world, the world of social media was just starting to take off.  With the perverse, nasty stories that make news headlines in current times, I was really expecting this story to take a much darker and dreadful turn than what it did.  It is not so much that I myself have a diluted mind but rather I have become accustomed to terrible acts people have done to others through social media.

My first reaction was to verbally rip this woman apart for leading Nev on and creating multiple false personalities.  How he handled it was exceptional and I applaud him for it, because I am unsure if I would have been able to do the same.  I do see some goodness in that woman.  I know very few people who would go out of their way to marry someone with two mentally disabled children such as those twins.  Taking care of them is a full time job and an immense sacrifice; I know what it is like to have someone mentally disabled in one's family.  She is most certainly in the wrong in this story and for the sake of her mental health and the health of her family, she  needs to stick with one profile that is hers and hers alone.  She cannot live in a fantasy world acting as somebody she is not for it will get benefit her at all in reality.

  1. I was expecting the story to take a turn for the dark as well, Jack. I was especially surprised that Nev willingly rode with her in her car to an unknown location after affirming his assumptions that she was not who she was claiming to be. I would honestly be terrified that she would kidnap or murder me. I also think that he handled it exceptionally and I would have a similar reaction as yours if I was placed in that situation. I do think that his composure has a little to do with the fact that he was being filmed for a documentary and it would not sell well if he cussed her out or even worse.

  2. I found it surprising that Nev was so willing to communicate with the whole family. He talked with them on the phone, trusted them with some type of mailing address to receive gifts from them, and even travelled to their hometown with the intent of meeting this family. First of all, I considered him and his brothers brave and crazy—but mostly crazy—for going to someone’s house they didn’t really know at 2 or 3 something in the morning. There are a million ways in which that incident or even meeting the family could have gone wrong. In this day and time, I would rather be safe than sorry. Once Nev knew who he was communicating with was not who they said they were, he should have just cut ties and headed home. Thankfully, it did not end as badly as it could have gone. Ultimately, I felt bad for Nev because he got hurt through this whole ordeal and betrayed; I also felt bad for Angela because she did not get to live life the way she wanted to and opted to use social media to escape her current reality.

  3. I wonder how much of her actions was motivated by her situation at home. Dealing with the twins had to have been an enormous stress load and although her husband seemed very supportive of her she seemed a bit alienated from him. As a result it seems natural that she would focus on tasks like her artwork. Since her art is what her passion was for it may have started off as a way of getting attention for her passion by reaching out to Nev. Where she took it afterwards is unacceptable, but I wonder how much of it like you said was just a coping mechanism for other triggers in her life.
