Psyche

This week in class we discussed about the ‘’psyche’’ and the 3 main parts of the soul. I believe that these 3 main parts of the soul do exist and cooperate with each other in order to keep our body in balance and safe from any bad influences. I always thought how the soul would be able to keep balance if the human body is too complex? Our mind and soul are complete different things in which one of them aims for a complete rational thinking and the other one is always related to the emotional part of our body.
The soul has 3 parts, appetitive, spirited and rational.
Appetitive is the part of the soul that just has wants, needs and desires and only that. The only function this part does is give you things you need to satisfy at all cost.
The spirited part can be counted as the spiritual (obviously) and emotional part of the body, in which all your emotions and your beliefs can be found.
And at last, there is the rational part, in which all the reasoning, the common sense lives, there is no room for ‘’what if’’ here, there is only room for things you can touch and see.
I consider this to be really interesting because as I mentioned before, I always believed there has to be a way that soul keeps balance in our body, because I am pretty sure the soul is more than just this thing that gives your life.
There has to be a balance between these 3 in order to keep a healthy, sane person (in my opinion). In my case my desires can be classified as sushi and coffee, I need these two things in order to have a good life, if I don’t I’ll probably be in a bad mood, but even I know that you can’t just eat all the sushi in the world or drink all the coffee in the world. There has to be a limit to everything.  Sometimes listening to music is the best thing I can do in order to stay happy and calm.

Every single time people ‘’break’’ the balance of the soul they suffer, let us give an example of people who are too rational, who don’t believe anything they don’t touch or see, they can be annoying people who no one likes to talk to. There could be also people that just do cocaine or liquor all day just filling their desires, we can’t do a lot of only one thing, we have to equally distribute our time for all 3.

  1. While I do tend to agree with the theory of our soul being divided into three parts, I find that the definitive statement that our "mind and soul are completely different things" to be contradictory to your following statements. As you stated, our emotion and sense of reason are essential to maintaining homeostasis in our own bodies. While I agree with this statement, we would not experience such sensations without our brain, or mind, processing these external stimuli and and producing these supposed emotions. Personally, I believe that these emotions we experience are not a product of our own soul's desires but rather the product of our brains at work. This can also be said for our desires in life and our sometimes irrational behavior. Finally, I am not sure if i can completely agree with the ideology that maintaining these three parts is the key happiness. It sure would be boring to not do anything bad your entire life, or as some might say, "live a little". I find that a little dismay in one's life leads to more rewarding experiences down the road.

  2. I agree with majority of your post, but you seem to only list the "cons" of focusing on one part of the soul. Situations vary in life for everyone. Sometimes the most rational thing is to please your appetitive part of your soul.

  3. I believe in dualism, the idea that the mind and body are two separate entities. I think that what you failed to mention was how each part of the soul compliments each other If you recall to the discussion in class, we talked about how sometimes our appetitive part may influence us to make certain decisions and they may override the other 2 parts. Is it rational and normal to consume all the sushi in the world just because you like it? I am not saying that I disagree with you, but each part of the soul is important to keep our body in homeostasis. Sometimes emotions get the better of us and lead us to commit irrational decisions. Sometimes our lack of interest (appetitive) may alter our spiritual side and maybe affect our emotions. Each part is complimentary to each other. However, I do agree with everything else.

  4. To understand this you must first believe that the soul exists. I am a believer that it does and this brings me to another interesting topic. I live next door to a medical student who has told me that when they weigh a person that has died and then weigh him again with all his extremities taken away from him back in. There is still a small amount of mass that cannot be accounted for. There is a balance that needs to happen between the three sections like you said. Balance happens all around us in nature and only makes since to happen within us as well. But if one is more dominant than the others, there is not a chaos that occurs. It just makes us different.
