This week in class, we watched a film about a girl, who was
convicted of murder, being subjected to an endless form of punishment by having
to relive the same day over and over again. When the film first started, I
thought this was going to be a propaganda film about how the current techno –culture
is turning people into passive observers in their everyday lives. Essentially, when I saw the people recording
the girl being chased by the crazy masked guy, I thought the director was
trying to emphasize the fact that it has been increasingly common in recent
years for people to pull out their phones and record what’s happening rather
than helping the person who is in danger. While this may have not been the main
point of the movie, it is important to consider that the people who went to
this exhibit in this film were just an exaggerated form of the passive observers
in our current society.
If people
continue to become desensitized and less involved in their surroundings, who is
to say that we won’t all turn into those people who voluntarily went on the
exhibit. Moreover, do you think that the form of punishment used in the movie
is viable and, more importantly, ethically right? Personally, I do not feel
that it is morally right, even though she was guilty. Even if they did leave
her memories intact, I still believe that those involved are no better than the
girl. Basically, the people who are recording her are just reenacting what she
did when the murder took place, but they are not considered to be just as
guilty just because it is just a reenactment. Lastly, since the tourists seemed
to be enjoying watching her running for her life, while in her confession video
she seemed remorseful, I think this makes them guiltier and less human than the
girl convicted. That is just my opinion though.
This behavior of being passive recorders you pointed out is a great topic. However it can be seen as a negative idea being as the person recording is not interjecting to help, as we discussed in class it can be a way to help solve a bigger issue. As with recordings of police brutality making changes slowly but surely. More states are receiving legislature about cameras on police officers. Filming the action can also be seen as a way to help ensure justice will be served, even though it isn't always the case were justice is rightly served. However with this movie I personally don't think this form of punishment is right by any means.
ReplyDeleteI believe that those recording her have hatred and anger in their hearts. The anger and hatred in their hearts comes from the young lady and her boyfriend murdering the little girl. I believe that the punishment given for the young lady's actions are bad actions to begin with, but they become worse when you have an ill-will behind it. But the film did make me think about passive recording also.I witnessed numerous events that I could have intervened in , but I chose not too. In some cases, I even recorded. The film really made me think about myself. I should stop watching, and start stopping.

ReplyDeleteI totally agree with your post. I think many people are too caught up in their own world and the world of social media, to the point where one would only help another if it benefits them as well. I also agree that the people responsible for this exhibit were just as guilty as the murderer. How were they any better? They tortured and caused just as much agony as the main character.
ReplyDeleteI would like to bounce off of what Ryan said about the social media. People cannot live without their iPhone and it is sad, but this shows their dependence. They must be attached to them at all times and must always know what is going on. This is perfectly represented in black mirror with the on lookers passing on information to the other people. The continuous network of information that surrounds us today can cloud our mind like they told the girl in the movie. Once you look at the image you are hooked. This is similar to YouTube or any other social media site that is around. There are always little side options that draw you deeper and deeper in until you have spent most of the day wasting away. This is truly sad and i feel like this is what our society is slowly progressing toward.
