In class this week, we watched and discussed the movie "Catfish." In the discussion, it was mentioned that probably the worst thing that Angela did was bring Abby into her crazy web of deception. This is true, but it also extended to Abby's friend seeing as she had some play in the painting lie. Abby's friend seemed to me that she knew about the lie, but she didn't remember whether or not she painted or not. This struck me as odd seeing that Angela had gone as far as to include Abby's friend in the lies.
I also firmly believe the Angela was cheating on her husband. Here is a link to the multiple definitions of "cheat" from dictionary.com http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/cheat?s=t According to this, Angela definitely cheated. She influenced Niv and commited fraud in just about every way through facebook, the paintings, and phone calls/texts. Obviously, cheating is morally wrong.
How do you feel about Abby's friend being involved in Angela's lies as well? How do you feel about Angela cheating? Do you believe that she did cheat or do you believe that she just got caught up in it? If you believe that she cheated, why do you think she did it?

ReplyDeleteRegarding Abby's involvement in the matter, I agree completely with the class consensus that making Abby participate in the lie is the worst thing Angela did throughout the course of the documentary. However, when considering whether or not what Angela did would constitute as cheating is a little hazy. Overall, after completing the movie, I felt as if Angela never harbored any unfaithful intentions towards Rev, but instead her other persona did. Realistically, I believe Angela never considered that she would ever meet Rev and was content with living her alternate life as Megan. Initially, I believe that that her Megan personality was the only one that harbored feeling towards Rev, but as it progressed these feelings started to leave a mark on the real Angela. Therefore, it seems her lie escalated to the point where she was unintentionally being unfaithful to fulfill some missing aspect in her life.

ReplyDeleteI do believe that Angela involving her daughter and her friend in the lie is the most wrong and immoral thing she's done. As far as intentionally cheating, I don't think she did. But then again you can tell that she felt some type of physical attraction towards Nev because of the painting she made for him in the beginning and the trouble she went through maintaining the relationship between him and Megan when she could have ended it at any time. So the question of her cheating intentionally is pretty hard to answer.
ReplyDeleteI believe that was one of the worst things Angela did, however the whole lie was bad. I understand that Angela was lonely but it seemed pretty bad for her to create a 19 year old persona and talk to boys soooooooo much younger than her. It also seemed a little selfish for her to involve soooooo many people in her lie. I Felt it was inconsiderate for her to manipulate people's emotions at her convience. That was on of the worst things she did,in my opinion. She played with Nev's emotions and heart . He did afterall drive all the way down there to meet Mehgan.
