Silver Linings
Ms. Johnson today in class noted that if she were in our shoes that she would second guess coming to class everyday, because we always have the thought that something might go awry. Every couple months in America schools of all ages statistically have the chance to be under siege from some armed attacker. For instance this week a college in Oregon was attacked my a man with a hand gun; the aftermath included nine deaths and nine injured. Among those injured was a man became, in my eyes, a hero. The final room to be breached at the college before the attacker was eventually stopped contained a man by the name of Chris Mintz. As an Army veteran, he did was his military trained instincts urged him to do. As the attacker reached the door Mintz took charge at the armed assailant he was shot five times, two after he was already downed. With this act the attacker was distracted and was taken down by police. Chris Mintz is now stable in the hospital with two broken legs. Is it morally right what Mintz did? Should he have stayed out of the way to possible save himself? Does self preservation trump an honorable sacrifice for the many? In my mind it is. When going to class in the future remember to think about the hero in others and in yourself rather than the coward(s) who can possibly put the horrible news stories into a personal perspective. Hooyah Chris Mintz, keep fighting the good fight.

Yes!! I believe Mill would agree that Mintz's actions were morally good. Mintz acted based on what he believed would be best for the greatest number of people. It even has a bit of a Socrates flair as well, since the context plays a rather important role in whether his actions were morally valid or not. We definitely need more people like Chris Mintz, who are willing to lay their lives down for others.
