Schools and Guns

Today in class we started to talk about the amount of school shootings that have happened in the last decade or so, the fact that people in America are becoming numb to this type of tragedy, the sad fact that we have to worry about something like this possibly happening in our school since it is so common, and the issue on gun control.  First, the amount of shooting that have happened in schools recently is crazy to me.  We said that there have likely been two dozen shootings like the one that happened in Oregon on Thursday.  Whether they have all had some kind of motive, like the man in Oregon killing Christians, or just random, there is no way of justifying these shootings.  They have happened so many times that people are slowly becoming numb and getting used to hearing that they have happened.  I firmly believe that regardless of the situation, the more something happens, the less shock or impact it has on people.  Sadly, this applies in this situation.  Even I am less and less surprised when I hear that something like this has happened.  As Ms. Johnson said today, it is not right that we should come to school every day and have to worry about something like this happening to us.  However, with as many times as it happens, it is almost impossible to not think about the fact that it very well could happen to us or anyone that we know.  With all that being said, I think taking guns away from people completely is not the way to solve this issue.  There are many people who are very responsible with their firearms who do not deserve to have them taken away.  I could see making it harder to get guns or educating people more who have guns, but removing them completely is not my idea of fixing this problem.

  1. I agree with you that taking away guns from people would not fix this problem. Many people would rebel against the idea of not having their 2nd amendment rights, and will obtain firearms illegally. That being said, something must be done with the number of shootings that are taking place in America. People have been saying for years that gun laws must be regulated, but there has been no change and the number of shootings has skyrocketed. Although I don't personally have anything against people owning guns, the statistics of people owning guns in America compared to people around the world is disturbing and astonishing. I remember seeing a graph on Facebook after the tragic killing of the 20 school children a few years ago. The graph was labeled "Firearms per 100 people." America has more than double than the next country when it comes to firearms, and double the firearm homicides than the next country.
